Denis Hulme's racing biography


Denis Clive "Denny" Hulme,was born in 18 June 1936,in New Zealand. He made his world championship debut in formula one at Monaco, in 1965 with the Brabham team. Later that year he scored his first points finishing for in France.In 1967 he won his first formula one world championship, by winning twice(in Monaco and Nurburgring) in the 11-race championship.
He was the first world champion from New Zealand.



In 1968 he moved to the Mclaren team.In 1970, Bruce Mclaren, Mclaren's team boss and a great friend of Hulme's was killed testing the CanAm McLaren M8D.This affected Denny. Later that year he burned his hands from methanol when his car caught fire during practice for the legendary Indy 500.As a result, he missed the Dutch Grand Prix in 1970. Undeterred, he still managed a creditable fourth in the championship with 27 points.He retired from formula one in 1974,but continued to race Australian Touring Cars. A favorite event of Hulme's was the Bathurst 1000,held at the famous Mount Panorama
track in Australia. In the 1992 event he was sharing a Benson & Hedges-sponsored BMW M3 with Paul Morris. After complaining of blurred vision Hulme suffered a massive heart attack at the
wheel whilst traveling part the way down the 200-mph Conrod Straight. He was the first world champion who died from natural causes.
