Brawn Victorious in Melbourne 2009 - F1 News

We don't exactly know what to write or what to say about what we saw today. The team that didn't know if it was even going to race this season, the team of people who were almost unemployed just a few weeks later, a team that didn't even have time to put its sponsors' logos on its drivers suits, won the race. Not only won but it took the second place as well, leaving no doubts about the role Brawn GP is willing to play in this year's championship.

Jenson Button won the Australian race while his teammate Rubens Barichello took second place after an accident between S. Vettel and R. Kubica 2 laps before the end during their fight for the second place.

Button had a good start and he kept his position throughout the race. Barichello on the other hand had a bad start, when his gearbox went on neutral, as he said during the interview after the end of the race. Also he had a few contacts with some other drivers during the race, which caused some of them to retire, while he faced some problems with his car, but managed to stay in and fight.

S. Vettel was second during the best part of the race, with R. Kubica following him, showing that both Red Bull and BMW are in good shape. Their race ended two laps before the end when Kubica tried to pass Vettel and they crashed on eachother.

Third place went to J. Trulli with Toyota while Hamilton took fourth, a result that is great, considering the problems of his car in terms of in track speed.

Glock, Alonso, Rosberg and Buemi copmleted the first eight positions on the final results.

During this race, the first in 2009, we have seen a few things, regarding the teams and their situation, as well as some things about the new regulations.

First of all everything seem to have turned upside down, in terms of winning capability. Brawn is the fastest team, Toyota and Red Bull are also very fast. BMW remained competitive (at least on Kubica's hands), while Williams climbed a bit higher compared to last year's performance.

On the other hand, McLaren lost its touch with the top positions of the grid, showing that both Hamilton and Kovalainen have not helped a lot in evolving the car during the winter testing. The team is lacking experience on the drivers' side but it has the budget and the response ability to overcome the difficulties, so we can expect a rise in performance. However we can't really say if it is going to be enough to put the team back in the champion chase position.

Ferrari is in a better situation than McLaren. It certainly lacks the speed that will bring the team back in front, but the overall look of their performance is encouraging (if we can say that for a team that won the constructors' championship last year).

Renault seems to have held its performance near the middle of the positioning. The team has the advantage of being the only one who will evolve the engine of its car so that it will rise to a level near its competitors. So we definitely expect a rise in performance for Renault. Also Alonso is a great driver, and he can help a lot in terms of evolution.

Toro Rosso made a step back (or the others made a step forward), while Force India, while improved, looks unable to follow the others. The gap is much smaller though.

Let's not forget that an appeal is about to be judged on April 14th 2009, considering the usage of a diffuser which is on the edge of the regulations, by Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams.

P.S.
What do you think Honda is thinking about the results? After all they paid for the evolution of this car before they decided to quit F1 racing.
P.S. 2
Ros Brawn confirmed that he is the best manager and racing director in Formula 1. From literally unemployed, he and his team became the winners and the main championship chaser for this year.
