We have finally reached the end of the 2008 Formula 1 season. The last race held a thrilling finish for the very end. The Brazilian grand prix started as expected. Boring and with very conservative driving from all drivers except for Massa.
He gave everything during this race and probably had the race of his life. He took the pole, he drove faster than anyone else and finally won the race. However this was not enough as Lewis Hamilton took the so much needed 5th place at the very last corner of the race.
Lewis started a conservative race, trying to hold 4th or 5th place at times. He didn't push, he didn't risk. He had a boring race and everything seemed to stay this way until the end.
The race started with rain, causing all teams to switch to intermediate tyres. Soon after the start, the rain stopped and everyone continued the race on normal tyres. Massa was in front, and the next three places were being exchanged by Vettel, Alonso and Raikonen. Lewis Hamilton was fifth, following a slower pace to secure his championship.
We had to wait until the last 7 laps, when the rain showed up again. Every one switched to intermediate tyres immediately in order to remain safe in their positions. The only pilot that stayed on normal tyres, was Timo Glock. By that time, Vettel has dropped behind Lewis Hamilton, while Timo Glock seemed to have made a right choice, which put him in 4th.
Lewis had another problem coming. He had Vettel right behind him, pushing for the 5th place. Vettel was much quicker in his "humble" Torro Rosso, confirming that he (along with Alonso) is the fastest man on wet track.
He finally passed Lewis. All of a sudden the young Briton saw the title going away from him, as he came to a point when he actually had to fight for it. He started pushing for the first time in the race, and he was slipping all the time behind Vettel who, unlike Hamilton, seemed to have absolute car control under rain.
Lewis Hamilton almost did it again, proving what we had written one year ago that he is not "world champion material". Luckily enough for him, they met Timo Glock fighting to keep his Toyota on track, at the very last corner. They passed him so finally Lewis took the championship.
Felipe Massa finished a world champion, but the title has been lost just afterwards, a few hundred meters before the finishing line.
Many conclusions can be made from this season, many opinions will be heard. The undisputed one, however, is that there has never been a more dramatic championship ending. After 18 races, hundreds of laps and thousands of racing kilometers, the championship came to an end right a few hundred meters before the finishing line, and after the winner of the race had been declared (but before the race ends).
This is what F1 is all about after all, isn't it? Drama can show up even on the last second of an otherwise boring race.
