That is going to be it. We have reached the final qualification session of the season. We have two world champion challengers, and a gap of 7 points between them. Each one of them got what he wanted during this session. Massa pushed hard and claimed a glorious pole, while Lewis Hamilton followed a more conservative strategy and took fourth.
Felipe Massa has to win this race in order to have some realistic chances of winning the title. On the other hand Lewis Hamilton will be happy if he got a 5th place, a place that will crown him champion no matter what.
So Felipe took the pole. The "only" thing he has to do now is win the race, and hope that his rival will face high competition from the other drivers, which will cause him to lose places. He topped the qualification charts with a great lap of 1:12:368, showing that he wants to do this so bad, especially in front of his fellow countrymen.
Lewis Hamilton seems to have chose a more conservative strategy for tomorrow, but we will have to see what will happen during the pit stops to be sure.
Away from the two of them, Jarno Truli got a spectacular second place, and this would be the main subject of this article, if this hadn't been the last race of the year.
Kimi Raikonen finished third, followed by Lewis Hamilton. The other McLaren was right behind him at 5th and Alonso completed the third line on the grid with a 6th place.
The weather forecast says there is going to be an 80% chance of raining tomorrow, during the race, and as we can all understand this could ruin strategies and mix the deck all over. We must also remember that Alonso is right behind Lewis, and he would be more than happy to be able to deny him the title. He may be saying otherwise, but what happened last year is not going to be easily forgotten.
So Felipe should look forward, towards winning the race, while Hamilton should be looking backwards, towards retaining his qualification position until the end.
If there was a bet on that I would bet on Alonso deciding the title.
