Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel made the surprise in Monza's qualifying session, as he took the pole position. The drivers were racing under heavy rain, which caused Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen, not to be able to compete in Q3. Toro Rosso made a huge step, as Sebastian Bourdais also made a fast lap and took the 4th place. Heikki Kovalainen was second behind Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber was 3rd.

Felipe Massa was 6th behind Nico Rosberg who was in 5th place. The BMW's where not as competitive as they were in previous races, as Nick Heidfeld will start 10th and Robert Kubica 11th. Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton were disappointing as they will start from 14th and 15th place respectively.
