F1 racing today - Some thoughts after the Spanish grand prix

This weekend we have watched another race. It was a race just like most races we have been watching lately. Nothing happened. Nothing at all. The pole owner pulled off and finished first, followed by his teammate, and behind them all other teams according to their performing status.

The problem is that the last years we see no in track fighting. The best team wins, the others follow. Why is this happening?

Cars today play the biggest role in winning. The "driver factor" has been left out. We can't see a driver who can make the differece. Or better yet no driver can make the difference. Not because there are no good drivers, but simply because the cars pretty much run by themselves compared to some years earlier.

Second thing is that strategy is very important today. We are tired of watching pilots slowing down just because they or their teams don't want to risk some points. Especially when the drivers drive for the same team. The fans don't want a #1 and #2 driver in one team. They want to see fights and overtakings. Like the Senna Prost twin back in 1988 and 1989. It was an interesting championship although McLaren was by far the fastest team. Alonso and Hamilton was a pair of drivers that could give us something like this, but the strategy didn't let them.

So what can be done? The return of the slick tyres is a good choice. The aerodynamic changes also. But I don't thing that these changes are going to do the difference. There is need for more drastical measures. What about manual gearboxes? What about simple iron disk brakes which will do braking a lot harder? I think that these two changes could do a lot in bringing back the "driver factor" to F1.

But then again what do we want? We want to see high tech cars running, or just some old fashioned ones doing the same? As far as most fans are concerned we just want to see in track fighting. We want to see drivers taking risks. this is why they are being paid after all. We want to see what we pay for when we buy a ticket for a race. We can't stand waiting for who is going to pit first, what strategy is he following or if someone is going to retire to see an overtaking, or better, a simple change in positions.

We may have many drivers fighting for the title, as we had last year for the first time in many years, but this did not came through an in track fight. So this is what we want. Interesting races from start right till the end.
